John Hughes was Carolia’s Inaugural Chairperson and he had a vision for introducing hydroponic gardening to our sponsor children in East Bali.
In addition to improving the diet of desperately poor villagers hydroponics are ideal as less water is required and they could be established in areas such as Seraya where general farming in the ground is prohibitive due to almost solid rock and rainfall is limited.
John’s hope was that the knowledge and skills learnt by the children would be taken back and shared with their communities, allowing families to benefit from fresh fruit & vegetables which are currently absent from their diets.
John’s Farm was built in Subagan, Amlapura as a teaching facility with lessons held every Sunday. The children in attendance share in the harvests every few weeks.
John’s Farm has been a hive of activity since day 1 and has generated lot of interest with the children, their families & communities.
Representatives from the Agriculture Department of local Government have shown a keen interest and have attended workshops in an effort to learn more.
The success of John’s Farm in 2014 resulted in the establishment of a hydroponic greenhouse at the rear of our community centre in Seraya. Also a teaching facility, this allows the children in Seraya to undertake the same training as those at John’s Farm.
Moving forward, 2018 will see the first, of what we hope will be many, mobile hydroponic farms set up for poor families and small communities.
These mobile farms cost AUD200 and Carolia is hopeful of securing individual sponsorship for each farm and they will be gifted to the most desperate families who will benefit most from them.
